You can also catch local San Diego talent at the festival, such as the Jazz Jammers from La Mesa and High Society Jazz Band from La Jolla. Tips for Attending Craft Shows in San Diego

Wednesday, January 13th, 2016

One of the best ways to gain knowledge and information about interior design is to attend a craft show. Craft shows and expos are great ways to gather materials, meet people with similar interests, and harvest new ideas for your place. There are tons of craft gatherings going on in San Diego all year-round. Here are some pointers to maximize your time while attending craft shows in San Diego.

Sign Up Early

It helps to sign up for tickets early—some of the more popular shows and conventions can sell out quickly. Some larger San Diego craft shows are recurring and happen every year. These ones tend to post information about their events sooner. An example of this is the Harvest Festival at Del Mar Fairgrounds, one of San Diego’s biggest craft shows.

Signing up early is especially important if you plan to have your own exhibit or display at an event. You can also visit online calendars to see schedules of shows throughout the year.

Do Some Networking

Sure, we all love shopping online and buying goods that we normally don’t have access to in our neighborhoods. But one thing that’s missing from those transaction is the human element. Craft shows are an excellent opportunity to network and meet other crafters. Be sure to take down contact info from any vendors or attendees that might be of interest to you. If you have one, bring your own business card and introduce yourself to potential colleagues or clients.

Ask Lots of Questions

Along those same lines, craft shows are an excellent time to ask any specific questions you might have. These can be about anything—specific materials used, design techniques, project ideas—it’s really up to you. Vendors tend to be open and willing to give advice while you’re at their station. Other attendees might also have some good tips and personal stories to share.

Have a Plan or Itinerary to Maximize Your Time

With craft shows and expos, one comment that many people have is, “I didn’t get to see all visit all the vendors that I wanted to.”  You can avoid this by planning your day and forming an itinerary. That way, you can at least have a loose idea of the main displays that you want to see.

If possible, try and call ahead or visit the website and see which vendors and craft displays will be present. You can also find out the times and locations for instructional classes and seminars. At the very least, there should be a map of all the vendors and the floor layout provided by the host when you get to the event. You can circle or number your “plan of attack” and draw out a route for your day.

Bring a Friend or Go in a Group

When it comes to arts and crafts shows, the more the merrier! Bringing friends is a great way to introduce them to your hobbies if they aren’t already fans. Also, you can split the group up and cover more ground that way. Later on, you can regather and report back on your findings. Also, some shows might offer group discounts.

When it comes to crafts and interior design, being more active in the community can really boost your skill set and knowledge base.
